Celebrating 40 Years of Save Our Streams
|
 |
Throughout 2011, the League will celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the Save Our Streams
program. With the creation of SOS in 1969, the League gave citizens a simple, reliable tool to assess and protect their
local streams. Over the years, Ikes and other volunteers have spent countless hours analyzing water quality, identifying
problems, and developing solutions that protect waters essential for drinking and for fish and wildlife. The program's
method of biological monitoring is so simple and effective that it has served as a model for other groups and state governments.
This gives us an opportunity to raise public awareness about the conservation work being done by League
members all across the country. Over the next year, the League will provide materials and support for public and chapter
events, develop an SOS theme for the League's national convention, and pursue opportunities nationally to highlight our
leadership in volunteer monitoring.
